I've read that the coupe and sedan have equivalent performance.

I would definitely stay away from the soft top as a track car, as many clubs and tracks prohibit or restrict convertibles. Current BMWCCA rules in my area (NJ and DelVal, PA) prohibit ragtops on track unless you have a full cage and a log book. Some tracks (NJMP, Lime Rock) have fairly restrictive requirements for convertibles as well.

Well, i lost out on the $8000 E36. I have found a '99 supercharged E36 for $12K. Any insight on S/C E36s?

I'm decided on a 95-99 E36 M3. Searching as we speak. Thank you for all the kind folks who offered the helpful advice. See you at the track.

Cheers
